Thermodynamics and economics

چکیده
The application of principles of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics to economic systems is considered in a broad historical perspective, extending from prehistoric times to the present day. The hypothesis of maximum entropy production (MEP), which has been used to model complex physical systems such as fluid turbulence and the climate of the Earth and other planets, may be applied to human economic activity, subject to constraints such as the availability of suitable technology, and the nature of political control. Applied to the current abundance of available energy from fossil fuel reserves, MEP is shown to have significant policy

Is neoclassical microeconomics formally valid? An approach based on an analogy with equilibrium thermodynamics
The relation between Thermodynamics and Economics is a paramount issue in Ecological Economics. Two different levels can be distinguished when discussing it: formal and substantive. At the formal level, a mathematical framework is used to describe both thermodynamic and economic systems. At the substantive level, thermodynamic laws are applied to economic processes. In Ecological Economics, the...
متن کاملReconciling resource economics and ecological economics: the economics of sustainability and resilience
Cross disciplinary dialogue between economics and ecology has within economics centered on the two subdisciplines of bioeconomics and ecological economics. This division in economics reflects the division in ecology between population and systems ecologists. Recent developments in ecology are aimed at a more integrated approach to ecologic al research. One example of such an approach is that of...
متن کاملThe Influence of Thermodynamic Ideas on Ecological Economics: An Interdisciplinary Critique
The influence of thermodynamics on the emerging transdisciplinary field of ̳ecological economics‘ is critically reviewed from an interdisciplinary perspective. It is viewed through the lens provided by the ̳bioeconomist‘ Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen (1906–1994) and his advocacy of ̳the Entropy Law‘ as a determinant of economic scarcity. It is argued that exergy is a more easily understood thermodyn...
متن کاملConstitutive Explanations as a Methodological Framework for Integrating Thermodynamics and Economics
The common approach to integrating thermodynamics and economics is subsuming thermodynamic aspects among the set of constraints under which economic activity takes place. The causal link between energy and growth is investigated via aggregate econometric analysis. This paper discusses methodological issues of aggregate analysis and proposes an alternative framework based on recent developments ...
متن کاملDisequilibrium Economics and Development
The history of Economic Theory shows in several stages the influence of Thermodynamics. The analogies between economic systems and thermodynamic systems are at the same time quite obvious and misleading. Important thermodynamic notions lack of counterparts in Economics, making the goal of transferring concepts -other than the trivial analoguesfrom one discipline to the other an epistemological ...
متن کاملMulti-objective optimization of two hybrid power generation systems for optimum selection of SOFC reactants heat exchangers mid-temperatures
Increasing efficiency and decreasing cost are the main purposes in the design of the power generation systems. In this study two hybrid systems: solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)-gas turbine (GT) and SOFC-GT-steam turbine (ST); are considered. Increasing the SOFC input temperature causes thermodynamics improvement in the hybrid system operation. For this purpose, using two set of SOFC reactants heat...
